Barcelona

Whenever we’re planning a weekend away or a holiday, as you will read from previous blogs, we always look to travel bloggers for ideas and inspiration. We love to read blogger’s itineraries and highlights and recommendations.
So when a dear friend asked for an itinerary for her and her daughter that will be affordable and engaging, based on what we did when we visited Barcelona in 2017, we were inspired to write what we would say is the sylandsarah 5 Top Tips which includes things to do and good food to try !
Our trip was short (3 days) and it was just enough time to stay busy and see and do the city’s greatest highlights. We made sure we had done the checklist (see previous SylandSarah pre-travel checklist) and got our money exchanged to Euros in the uk. Budget about €30 euros per day for you both if you haven’t got food in the hotel and activities are between €20 and €40.

Top 5 tips:

1.  Visit Segrada Familia

Definitely the jewel of Barcelona, with its stain-glass windows and magnificent structures, it’s a large unfinished Roman Catholic church designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. The plan is to have it finished by 2026. The sculpted Biblical stories all around are magnificent, don’t miss it.
We booked this as part of our day tour booking(use Viator Tours), we skipped the lines with our VIP passes (you can and SHOULD buy passes online if you don’t include it in a tour to avoid hours in queues) and spent some time looking around the area which was busy with lots of quaint shops and mini tourist stalls. Being under 5’5, it takes some real looking up to see it’s magnificence.

2. Visit Parc Guell

Again by Antoni Gaudi, Parc Guell, which is free to enter and walk through, shows off some of his incredible ideas for the very wealthy owner who was looking to create a new suburb above the city for his daughter who had breathing difficulties.
You can also pay a few £s to sit on the mosaic tiled seat that winds like a ribbon around the edge of a huge flat ground.
Well recommended!
Ask your guide about the clever water storage system underneath where rainwater that seeps through the earth above is funneled into pillars supporting the structure.

3. Visit the Aquarium

We love the sea and naturally the tranquility an aquarium offers. The spectacular Oceanarium is worth the visit, it is unique in Europe! It is L’Aquàrium de Barcelona’s largest aquarium and home to the greatest number of species. You walk through a path where the ocean surrounds you and you could almost touch the sharks.
They also offer activities including diving for families, so ask at the reception, or check the website prior. https://www.aquariumbcn.com/en/activities/

4. Mar Bella Beach

Watch the sunrise on Marbella Beach, its got a long busy and exciting pier. Romantic for couples and very therapeutic for families!

Before walking too far up the beach though if you’re with young children, (NOTE you may walk into the nudist gay beach which isn’t too far from a children’s park )

5. Paella, Tapas & Sangria

You don’t get better Sangria than at home in Spain and Barcelona does it well!

There’s also Paella! What you get in the UK is nothing compared to having it here!

Wishing you fun and happy holidaying!

We sign out here with a fun pic taken at the aquarium 🙂
