Top 5 tips for visiting Lagos, Nigeria
Here are the top 5 tips from Syl&Sarah for Lagos, Nigeria!
Tip 1. Sunscreen & Hand-fan!
Nigeria boasts of beautiful tropical sunshine and in October / November you experience 29 – 39 degrees Celsius with some humidity. Prepare for it whether walking through the markets or sunbathing on the beach and you’ll be fine.

Tip 2. Water
Don’t drink from the taps or from pure water sealed bags like the locals will drink. We would recommend sticking with trusted bottled water companies like Eva or Evian.

Tip 3. Uber.
Uber was a life saver for us getting out and about, it was so easy and the drivers are remarkably patient and reliable.

Tip 4. Stay on the Island.
Lagos is divided into 2 parts, mainland and Island. There are lots of things to do locally in either part. We found that the majority of tourist activities were centred on the Island so it’s easier to get to e.g. Lekki Conservation Centre, Lekki Arts Market and Nike Art Centre.

TiP 5. Go out & Try the local cuisine
Go out! Nights out are great e.g. Hard Rock Cafe, Bogobiri Jazz Cafe on a Thursday night, Farm City for ocean front dining and entertainment. Food is served at most places and Nigeria is Au fait with fantastically seasoned sea food.
Simple yet familiar things we recommend for you to try are suya (chargrilled peppered beef), fried Yam & sauce, Jollof rice, Fried rice, beans & plantains.

If you like spicy food and seafood, we loved the large spicy grilled fish (croaker or catfish) & catfish Pepper soup the most!
For the more adventurous, why not wash your hands and join the locals with the traditional way of eating – Egusi sauce (made from protein rich seeds of certain cucurbitaceous plants) , ewedu sauce (flowering plants in the family Malvaceae) or efo riro (spinach sauce). These sauces are served with various types of flour based dishes mixed together with hot water similar to mashed potatoes to form a rounded shape.

For a bonus tip, why not get an outfit made?! There are so many tailors waiting to make custom outfits for you at ridiculously low prices compared to what you will pay in the UK. Choose your authentic African materials and the style you want and in a matter of a couple of days, you’ll have a stunning outfit.
