48 Hours in Gothenburg

Something different- If you’re looking for a nice city getaway in April to a place that’s not too busy, has lovely people, is rich culture and history and has some beautiful places to visit then look no further than Gotherburg, Sweden’s second largest city.

Our 48 hours started at the airport where you just can’t miss the massive VOLVO truck! Yes, a truck inside the airport – now that’s a first! Our fascination led to the discovery that this is where Volvo was born. We got a taxi to our hotel from the airport (costed about 450SEK) and guess what car we were driven in, only a 2018 VOLVO and the driver didn’t miss the opportunity to tell us that the tech in this car and the way it drives trumps Mercedes cars he’d ever driven!

The hotel was stunning to look at from the outside, a credit to Swedish design, with distinct light posts and a red carpet welcome. It was much more pleasant than the high rise city feels of most city break hotels. On entry, the first thing you notice is the bistro feel of the reception area – an air of French sophistication. All that was great but what made it even more special was the warm welcome by the reception staff who spoke perfect English and were all very polite, funny and superbly helpful at the same time. We had a very warm VIP welcome (pre-arranged) to a large room with all the features you would expect from a 4* Hotel in England! We couldn’t ask for more!

Going around was also a great experience. The location was perfect to walk for within 5 mins to reach stylish cafes, high end and mid-range shops which had high energy but was not overcrowded. We did a lot of walking within the first 24 hours, which led us to many beautiful locations, a walk down the river, bumping into the university, and a visit to the local theatre.

We enjoyed taking a walk down the high street, stopping for a spot of lunch at the Jerggens café (ask for the rice and chicken if you’re like us and keen on hot food)! Otherwise, the range is stunning, from the beautiful prawn on toast to the egg and cheese – ample options for vegetarians and vegans.

We decided to go to the Universeum, one of the city’s recommended visits. It was a blend of a natural rainforest experience, a large aquarium with impressive sharks, a science museum and a space exhibition. For the equivalent of £15 per person, we liked it, especially being lovers of the tranquillity offered by a large aquarium!

Now food! Saturday night dinner was at a lovely steak restaurant 5 mins walk from the hotel – think protein! How did we get there? You guessed it, we walked! Literally out, turn right and right again and keep walking for about 5 mins and its on the left! The food was delicious and about the same you’d pay for good steak in your nearest Miller and Carter.

I keep talking about the walking because we like to get our walk on during these short breaks but the tram was visibly available and from what we’re heard and read, with a weekend pass, you can get the tram quite easily to these locations and also get discounts on visiting the sites around the city.

Sunday morning and we have Less than 24 hours left, flight is at 9.20pm. The hotel kindly allowed us to have a late checkout so we didn’t have to worry about packing and checking out and so we were able to take full advantage of the day without thinking about luggage (there’s usually a small charge to pay 100SEK). After a very high protein breakfast at our hotel (food was ample and very tasty), our walks around took us around the Gothenburg museum which was on the same aveny street and was beautiful to look at.

We didn’t get to this but if you can, visit Liseberg amusement park! Head-spinning rides, carousels and concerts are present here in season, if you come in October, they go all out for Halloween and later in November the park opens up for Christmas!!!

Come along with us as we travel together.
