Lanzarote

Step away from the winter cold and step into Lanzarote!

Located in the easternmost of Spain’s warm and balmy Canary Islands, off the coast of Africa near Morocco, Lanzarote’s unique, one-of-a-kind landscape makes it a fantastic couples destination, especially for a winter break. It boasts of fabulous cultural attractions, natural wonders, unusual wineries, and plenty of water sports.

Here are Syl & Sarah’s Top 5 tips for Lanzarote:

1.Timanfaya national park is a must see. We visited Lanzarote and soon discovered why these extraordinary striated rock formations is a regional treasure. At the top, there’s a restaurant where meat and fish are cooked on a grill using heat coming up from inside the volcano! Can you avoid to miss this?

2.Teguise is also worth the visit. It’s a little town and was formerly the capital city of Lanzarote. It’s beautiful cobbled streets meets a sunday market (who doesn’t love a bargain shop?!)

3.Playa Blanca beach is beautiful. Given Lanzarote’s location in the Atlantic Ocean, there’s no surprise that this city is crawling with scenic beaches to enjoy and lap around in. We walked the length of the beach and it took us the best part of 3 hours but with stops to chill and observe the beauty of the island. It’s well worth the venture.

4.Summer isn’t the best. Go in the winter, autumn or spring. It’s very warm in the summer with temperatures reaching highs of 29°C but for us it was a Christmas break so about 18 – 22 degrees.

5.Wine tasting tour. This has to be one of the best things to do in Lanzarote, even for us that aren’t drinkers, learning that it was the preferred wine of royalty back in Shakespeare’s day, so much that his plays used to include “cups of canary” in their vocabulary, makes it worth recommending.
