In our UAE trip this year, we stopped at Abu Dhabi.

What a stop?! From palaces to brilliant malls and through the Ferrari world, we would definitely recommend Abu Dhabi!

Abu Dhabi is the Capital and second most populous city after Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

This city is also the capital of Emirates of Abu Dhabi, largest of the 7 Emirates that constitute United Arab Emirates (UAE).

12 interesting facts about Abu Dhabi:

  1. Abu Dhabi means “Father of the Gazelle”. It isn’t clear where the name ‘Abu Dhabi’ came from. But when translated directly from Arabic, it means “Father of the Gazelle.
  1. Centre of Industrial and Political Activities. Abu Dhabi comprises federal government offices and is the seat of the United Arab Emirates Government, home to the Abu Dhabi Emiri Family and the President of the UAE, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is from this family. Abu Dhabi accounts for about two-thirds of the roughly $400-billion United Arab Emirates economy.
  1. Used to be famous for Pearl Business. Abu Dhabi dealt in Pearls. As per the source about Pearling, the Persian Gulf was the perfect location for the pearls. Pearl divers dove for one to one-and-a-half minutes, and would have dived up to thirty times per day. There were no oxygen tanks and any other sort of mechanical device. The divers were not paid for a day’s work but received a portion of the season’s earnings.
  1. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest Mosque in Abu Dhabi. This Mosque was established by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, to unite the cultural diversities of Muslim World. Construction started in 1996 and completed in 2007. At the time of Eid it may be visited by more than 41000 people.(Here are a few photos from the magnificent mosque – strict dress code)
  1. The Yas Marina Circuit cost an estimated AED 3.6 billion to construct and is the most technologically advanced circuit in the world.The track can be split into two tracks to host two races simultaneously. The 5.55 km track covers 21 hectares and has 21 turns.
  1. Abu Dhabi consists of 700 kilometres coastline and has 200 islands
  1. Abu Dhabi was designed by Japanese architect Dr Takahashi in 1967 with the guidance of Sheikh Zayed.
  1. The city was originally built for 40,000 people but over time increased to be able to accommodate over 600,000 people.
  1. In 2015 Abu Dhabi had 383 887 camels
  1. The Capital Gate Building leans more than the tower of Pisa! The building slopes at an 18-degree angle which is 14 degrees more than the tower of Pisa. It is the furthest leaning building in the world.
  1. Al Ain is a world heritage location Al Ain is described as an “important testimony to the transition of cultures in the region from hunting and gathering to sedentarization.” UNESCO sites in Al Ain include the Jebel Hafeet Tombs, Bida Bint Saud and Al Ain Oases to mention a few.
  1. Indian Diaspora! Indians are largest ethnic group in UAE. They make up 40% of the total population. Most of the Indians reside in Abu Dhabi.
