Some things never change and if they’re really good, why should they?!
We went to Amsterdam and learnt some important things.
1. Amsterdam Is Sinking
The whole of Amsterdam plus some more is entirely built on water. You could clearly see some buildings a bit lop-sided because the soil underneath is so swampy. Buildings in Amsterdam are built on long poles that get dug deep into the ground to prevent them from sinking right down underwater.
2. Red light district
It’s not all about the red light district! Yes it exists and has existed for a long long time and will likely continue…find out the history, it’s so fascinating but I won’t bore you here! And it wasn’t just women up on the Windows even then. And there are souvenirs….
3. Amsterdam is multicultural
Home to highest number of nationalities out of any city in the world, Amsterdam boasts Dutch bicycles, Turkish haircuts, Indonesian curries, German sausages served with Beer from Australia.
Because it is such a multicultural city, over 85% of Amsterdam residents can speak more than two languages – usually Dutch, English and often German.
4. Anne Frank
Anne Frank walk is worth the venture. For me (Sarah), we studied Anne Frank in secondary school so walking through the passageways was like taking a walk through history and literature and correcting or affirming those pictures created.
5. Bike & Canal
The Canal tour is simple and peaceful, it takes you round on the sea but if you want a better understanding, get a guided tour and get some information. Amsterdam is so rich in history.
6. Madame Tussaud’s
It was our first visit to any and some of the stars were wonderful and some well, leave that to your imagination but the queues were far less than in the UK and we certainly had a blast.

- Yes lots of “things” are indeed legal so watch out for “mushroom cakes” being offered on the streets.
