We’ve heard so much about Greece, especially Santorini and Crete as many flocked to these places from the UK for a quick respite or romantic all inclusive getaway.
Ours was slightly different, we visited the capital and largest City in Greece, and learnt so much about how things are in Greece.
Lets share some good things about this place that will make it worth visiting when this lockdown lifts:
- Rich in history: Generally believed to be named after the goddess of wisdom, Athena, Athens is one of oldest cities in the world, home to the first known democracy in the world at 500BC. The Acropolis of Athens, built in 448 B.C. for the Greek goddess Athena, is one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites.

- Lots to see: Acropolis of Athens, Pantheon, Acropolis museum, plaka, temple of Olympian Zeus, Ancient Agora of Athens, Monostiraki… just to name a few

- Watch the Evzones: Such a sight to behold. With their pleated skirts white stockings and pompom shoes, the Evzones guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square will definitely grab your attention.
- Go in winter: In summer, everyone is in Athens, I mean its packed with fun and excitement and lots of activities and entertainment. If you like crowds and heat, that’s when you should go but for milder temperatures and a leisurely experience, go towards the end of winter when you have mild sunshine and some cool winds.

- Eat something new: Try the Taramasalata. A mainstay of any Greek meal are classic dips such as tzatziki (yogurt, cucumber and garlic), melitzanosalata (aubergine), and fava (creamy split pea purée). When in Greece, salads, olives and fresh cheese are a joy. Ask behind market counters for creamy and delicious feta kept in big barrels of brine. Greeks love their sweets, which are often based on olive oil and honey combinations encased in flaky filo pastry. The classic baklava involves honey, filo and ground nuts. Or try galatoboureko, a sinful custard-filled pastry. A more simple sweet is local thyme honey drizzled over fresh, thick Greek yogurt

No matter what you choose to do, you will have a fabulous time in Athens and if you have up to 10 days, you could even visit local beaches or indeed visit Crete and Santorini for a couple of days.
Happy Wanderlust.
